Wike congratulates Rivers United on NPFL victory
Governor Nyesom Wike has congratulated Rivers United on becoming Nigeria Professional Football League champions in 2021/22.
Rivers United were officially confirmed as champions after Plateau United's 2-1 defeat at Akwa United on Saturday.
The Rivers state governor on Sunday hailed the state-owned club's players and coaching staff after the memorable win that ended their five-year wait for the NPFL title.
Wike's congratulations were included in a press statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Kelvin Ebiri, on Sunday.
The statement read: "I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the coaching staff and particularly the able players at Rivers United for the valuable efforts they have made to emerge as the winners of the 2021/2022 NPFL.
“The government and good people of Rivers State are very proud of the team's heroics after their persistent performances and resilience they have shown throughout the 2021-22 season.
“It is worth noting that Rivers United have brought so much joy and happiness to football fans and supporters across the country over the years.
"This victory undoubtedly marks an important milestone in the history of Rivers State football."
Wike, who credited Rivers United's success to the team's determination, said it was very encouraging that the club would represent the country in next season's CAF Champions League on the back of league victory.
