Woman sells daughter to pay off debt in Ogun
Olaide Adekunle, 33, was detained by Ogun State Police Command officers for selling her 18-month-old child to an unidentified buyer for N600,000.
The suspect was detained after the woman's husband, Nureni Rasaq, filed a complaint at the Sango divisional headquarters, according to a statement from the command's spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi.
According to Oyeyemi, Rasaq said that his wife, Olaide Adekunle, had travelled to Lagos with their infant daughter, Moridiat Rasaq, on March 15 but had since returned without her.
He added that the woman was unable to provide any plausible explanation for the location of the aforementioned infant, making all efforts to learn what happened to the child futile.
“Upon the report, the DPO Sango division, CSP Dahiru Saleh, detailed his detectives to go after the said woman, and she was arrested.
“On interrogation, the suspect confessed that she has sold the baby to someone in Lagos at N600,000.
“When asked the reason for her action, she stated that she borrowed money from a microfinance bank, and when she was unable to pay back the money, the bank agents started threatening to deal decisively with her.
“It was consequent upon this that she ran to Lagos and started hawking sachet water.
“It was while hawking that she met a man who introduced her to the woman that eventually bought the child in Lagos,†the police spokesman said.
Meanwhile, DCP Babakura Muhammed, the state's acting commissioner of police, has ordered that the suspect be handed over to the SCID for additional investigation and potential baby retrieval.
