Woman shoots 2 officers before killing herself in Bay St Louis, Mississippi
Authorities have verified that two police officers were shot and killed early on Wednesday morning at Motel 6 in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. The cops, whose identities have not been made public, were responding to a plea for assistance from the motel, which is situated across a section of Interstate Highway 90 that passes through the Gulf Coast city, according to officials.
According to CBS affiliate WWL-TV, Bay St. Louis Police Chief Tody Schwartz allegedly verified that Sergeant Steven Robin and Officer Branden Estorffe were the two cops slain.
Before 4:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday, officers showed up at Motel 6, according to a news release from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. When they did, the two officers came across a person who the state agency has identified as a woman. The woman then shot one officer to death, wounded a second officer, and then killed herself, according to the bureau. According to WWL-TV, the first police was declared dead at the spot, while authorities verified that the second officer died from his injuries later on Wednesday morning.
"MBI is currently assessing this critical incident and gathering evidence," the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said in a statement. "Additional information may be made public at a later time."
The suspect's identity has not been made public, and it is still unclear what kind of service call led the police to the motel in the first place.
The state bureau's agents will deliver their findings to the state's attorney general's office after the inquiry is over, according to the statement.
Tate Reeves, the governor of Mississippi, addressed the incident in a tweet.
"Early this morning two Bay St. Louis Police officers were tragically shot and killed in the line of duty," he wrote in part, adding, "I am heartbroken by this terrible loss of two brave law enforcement officers. I am praying for their family, friends, their fellow officers, and the entire Bay St. Louis community. Every single day across Mississippi, our law enforcement members place their lives on the line in constant and repeated acts of selfless sacrifice for their community."
