Workers declare three-day warning strike

A three-day warning strike, scheduled for October 2–4, 2026, has been announced by public service employees under the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council due to what they describe as increasing financial and psychological hardship that affects employees and their dependents.

The industrial action is set to start at midnight on Friday, October 2, and end on Sunday, October 4. The council instructed its national and state leaders to organize workers for the strike.

The JNPSNC's National Secretary, Olowoyo Gbenga, signed a circular dated October 1, 2026, containing the directive. Gbenga urged the council's leadership to make sure the information was distributed to workers nationwide.

The decision, according to the circular, came after President Bola Tinubu received a letter dated September 21, 2026, alleging that the Federal Government had not responded to the requests.

As a result of the aforementioned, the council declared that the strike would begin at midnight on Friday, October 2, 2026, and last until Sunday, October 4, 2026.

Additionally, the circular urged federal, state, and local government employees to join the strike, emphasizing that the goal of the action was to raise awareness of the challenges faced by workers nationwide.

It stated, “In the same vein, all public servants in the services of federal, state and local governments are to join the warning strike because an injury to one is an injury to all, most especially, all workers, their dependants, vulnerable and hapless Nigerians are groaning terribly under the present economic hardship.”
