Zamfara NLC suspends strike
The Nigeria Labour Congress's Zamfara State chapter has called off the strike that it started two days ago. Keep in mind that state employees were among the nation's government officials who have not yet been paid the new minimum wage.
As instructed by the union's national body, the state chapter of the NLC has requested that the civil servants go on an indefinite strike.
However, after an agreement between the state administration and trade organisations, the walkout was put on hold Tuesday.
The agreement states that starting in March 2025, the state government will pay civil officials in the state a new minimum wage of N70,000.
In March 2025, organised labour and the state government signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the implementation of the new minimum wage of N70,000.
The Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Nakwada, said, “The state government will begin payment of the new national minimum wage in March next year after the completion of the worker’s verification exercise.
“A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between the state government and the organised labour.”
The NLC chairman, Sani Halliru, commended the state government for the gesture and urged the civil servants to return to work.
“We are calling on the civil servants to return to their respective working places from today Tuesday.
“We thank the state government for this arrangement, hoping that the new minimum wage will be implemented in March 2025”, he said.
